What can I give my baby to add iron and nutrients to his diet?

samuel’s mummy asked:

I started weaning at about 5 months. He’s a big baby and was showing all the signs of needing more than milk .He is coming up to 6 months now.He has fruit purees, cereal and vegetables once or twice a day.Im still breastfeeding.I have read that at 6 months they need more iron etc.Are there any specific foods I should be introducing at the mo or should I try a follow on milk perhaps?

Liquid baby vitamins is your easiest bet.

The iron we get from foods comes in the darker coloured vegetables–broccoli, kale, beet greens, swiss chard, and spinach (from least to best) ALL of which are too hard for him to digest just yet.

Well the normal foods for iron are spinach or meat.
You can buy baby vitamins with iron in them but only if the doctor feels he really needs them.
Weaning at 5 months is a bit young. I would give him some formula in bottles if you want to wean him off the breast. The formula has iron in it. Mine stopped using bottles at 17 months and they did it on their own without any problems.

    Stop!!!!!
Do not give him any supplements at this age unless your Doctor tells you to. Outside of the food he gets…at this age, it’s still the purreed stuff, he doesn’t need anything. You can easily overdose your little ones by giving him anything not Dr. approved. If your still breast feeding then up YOUR iron intake, he’ll get it though your milk and it’ll be better for both of you.

    Losing weight without starving yourself

My doc suggested I give my baby extra iron, they need it with all that formula they drink to prevent them from becoming anemic. There is this liquid form of vitamins for babies that comes with a dropper, you just mix the vitamins in with their formula. I think it’s called Poly….something, it’ll say infant vitamins w/ iron or something like that. I think 6 mos is a little early to give your baby anything but cereal & formula, but if you’ve already started, I guess it’ll be ok, it can just cause stomach/bathroom problems because their insides are still very delicate & sensitive.

    How to Lose Weight

Formula with iron is the best way to go if you aren’t going to breastfeed. Babies get all the iron they need from formula and baby food. If you are breastfeeding, try eating more iron yourself, it will pass to the baby with less of a chance of overdosing. If you are concerned, there is no stupid question to ask your doctor. Stay with the cereal and fruits and veggies, seems like he is just getting a bigger appetite is all. Maybe go to cereal in the morning, jar of veggies, 1/2 jar of fruit for lunch, 1/2 jar of veggies, jar of fruit for dinner.

Your baby should not get whole milk till 9 months at the earliest.12 months is more ideal. If you are worried about iron give him rice cereal at least once a day,it is loaded with iron,if for some reason he does not eat rice cereal you can give him iron drops. My 3rd baby we gave .5 ml of iron a day as prescribed by the pediatrician.I would see your doctor before using iron drops.
