Whey protein is intended for people who want to build muscle mass, so unless you are weight training, it wont do you much good. Rice can be very healthy for you, just choose brown rather than white (brown rice has more nutritional value, white is just empty calories.)
To lose weight, replace junk food choices with healthier ones. Switch from regular soda to diet (or better-water), eat fruit or veggies rather than chips, and choose whole grain breads or pastas rather than white. You will lose weight because these foods are not as calorie-dense and are more filling than junk food.

Muscle weighs more than fat so as you build muscle your weight will go up making you think you are giaing weight if you are measuring by a scale. I do replace my lunch with a protein drink but i have 6 small meals instead of 3 and i eat not white flour of white sugar . my carbs are very low also . i have 2 carb days that for dinner i have a sweet potato , brown rice and a vegtable . no meat for those meals . i drink a gallon of water.
